NMR Facility - Chemistry Department

GCIS Lab Instruments

Primarily serving researchers located west of Ellis Ave., the NMR Laboratory in the Gordon Center for Integrative Science is in room E340, near the spacious third-floor atrium. This location enables indoor access from the Eckhardt Research Center via a bridge over 57th St. and a path through the Kersten Physics Teaching Center.

Note: access to the GCIS third floor is restricted by swipecard configuration at all elevators and doors. Entry to the NMR lab requires separate swipecard activation by the NMR facility manager, which is provided after Level1 training.

400-2

This versatile automated 400 MHz multinuclear spectrometer serves most routine NMR needs of users outside of the Searle building. Upgraded in June 2020, its configuration mirrors that of 400-1 in Searle, except 400-2 has a newer probe (iProbe) and smaller autosampler (24 samples).

400-2 users are known for the diversity of their nuclei, frequent analysis of paramagnetic compounds, use of valved J. Young tubes (shortened to fit in the autosampler), employment of protiated solvents (non-deuterated), and brightly-colored samples.

500-3

This is the premium instrument in GCIS. Available for reservation-free walkup use between noon and 6:00 PM, reservations for extended use at other times are supported. This is the preferred instrument for intensive use, such as variable temperature (VT) experiments, DOSY/diffusion measurements, etc. Level2 training is required for use.

500-3 is the only spectrometer in GCIS available for VT experiments, which require short training session. Researchers must schedule VT training with the facility manager before reserving time for VT experiments.

Default Probe

  • Bruker QNP probe, 13C/31P/19F{1H}
  • Inner coil (more sensitive) = 13C or 31P or 19F
  • Outer coil = 1H
  • Z-gradients
  • ATM automated tuning module

Auto-
sampler

• Bruker BACS 120
• “Your personal robot”: This autosampler supports researchers needing to queue up analyses of several samples. Time reservation and logging in operate as with manual acquisition, and researchers may run as many samples as desired and for whatever time required within normal reservation limits. It is possible to run several samples at the same non-25 °C temperature.
